I interviewed my mom on what she thought on 9/11 I emailed her this is what she put,
How have things changed since 9/11? Since 9/11 many things have changed in America. We are fighting a new war, The War on Terror. This war has costs many lives not only from America but from everywhere in the world. One report estimates that at least 1.3 million people have been killed in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan from direct and indirect consequences of the U.S. “war on terrorism.” One million people perished in Iraq alone, a shocking 5 percent of the country's population. Besides fighting a war Americans have become more away of terrorism across the globe. Besides fighting a war and the loss of lives the United States and other countries have enforced many more restrictions on air travel and the items that are allowed on an airplane. The hijackers that took the planes on that dreadful day did so with simple boxcutters and the threat of violence. With these simple tools they were able to crash planes into buildings. The FAA realized that they had been to lenient on air travels and enforced stricter rules as well as a more complex and complete screening system for all passengers. Additionally the American government has passed many new laws and created new agencies to combat terrorism on American soil. The Department of Homeland Security and the Patriot Act are a couple of these new laws. The government is more strictly monitoring the activities of those they suspect of terrorism or those that may be friends with terrorists. The government is trying to prevent terrorism before it has a chance to happen again. What do you think of the level of security since 9/11? Overall I believe that the government is trying to do its job to protect American citizens, however no one is able to read people's minds and know what they will do before they do it. I do believe that we are safer than we were before 9/11 because the government is trying. But again nothing is guaranteed and those people who want to be evil can and will find a way to succeed. Do you think America feels safe since 9/11? I feel that America is as safe as it can be. I do believe that if someone wanted they would be able to find a way to strike us again. We have been attacked before 9/11 and I believe that at some point it could happen again. I do think that America is better able to defend herself against an attack. And that our military is ready to defend her. In my mind that is all I can rely on. Do you feel safe getting on an airplane? I feel as safe on an airplane as I would on any type of public transportation. I do believe it would be harder for airplanes to be hijacked in the same manner again, but with all of the new technology there is for defense and protection the technology for evil is just as developed. I have been on an airplane since 9/11 and am willing to travel that way again. I feel as safe as I can. I know that at any given point evil can happen. However, I do not live my life in fear. I need to live life as it is meant to be lived and to enjoy it.
